When applying for a background check, you must provide documentation covering the past five years.

Below is a list of valid documentation.

Employment

  • Employment contract – the employer must state the start date of employment
  • Employment confirmation – the employer must state the period of employment
  • Employee register from NAV

Education

Documentation from lower secondary school (ungdomsskole) is not required. For other education levels, the following applies:

  • Upper secondary school – diploma or screenshot from vigo.no (the diploma must show the name of the school, and the school year)
  • Folk high school – diploma or confirmation from the school
  • Higher education – diploma, transcript from the Diploma Registry, degree certificate, or admission letter

You may submit a decision letter from NAV, a registration history, or an annual summary for periods of unemployment.

Periods without documentation

Self-declaration is accepted for periods where no documentation exists. The document must include a handwritten signature from a witness—this can be a family member, friend, employer, or public office representative.
